Hello, my name is Francine Lubin and I am a student in Professor Lewis’ BLAS 125, Dynamics of the Black Community Class. I have chosen to interview my coworker at Black Infant Health because she and the rest of my team are making a big difference in the black community. Here is a photo of me and my other coworkers at Black Infant Health. Black Infant Health is a non-profit funded by the California Department of Public Health. We serve the greater San Diego County as a social service under the Neighborhood House Association. Kaitlyn (left) and Alex (middle) are both Community Outreach liaisons. Their job is to work in the community and recruit eligible women into our program and also outreach at events to spread the word about our program. One of the events they reached out to was the San Diego Mesa College Health Fair! We were photographed tabling at the event, with our flyers and referral forms set up as well as some other candy and giveaway items.

Here is the full setup of our tabling event at the Mesa College Health Fair.

Here is another photo of my coworkers and me at another outreach event. Kaitlyn and I were joined by our other coworker Chania.

You may have seen an advertisement like this on a bus and wondered what BIH is all about. Black Infant Health is a free program for women who are 16 years of age and older, identify as Black and/or African American, and are pregnant or recently gave birth (up to 6 months postpartum). We have a partnership with the San Diego County Food Bank that allows us to distribute free baby clothes and baby wipes to the women enrolled in our program. We also provide health education for new moms, prenatal and postpartum groups, transportation assistance to doctors' appointments, and access to a Public Health Nurse to attend appointments with the mothers. All in all, we are really here to support the growth and empowerment of Black babies and their mothers in hopes of reducing the infant and mother mortality rate in the black community.

You can learn more about Black Infant Health through our website blackinfanthealth.org. Also, if you or anyone you know can benefit from our services don’t hesitate to contact us!
