Introduction
My name is Nasro Mohamed. I'm 20 years old and was primarily raised by my grandmother in San Diego. I am currently in college pursuing a degree in medicine, focusing on becoming a physician associate.
What Inspired Your Career Path?
From a young age, healthcare has always fascinated me. The profound impact medicine has on human life is incredibly intriguing. I am currently working in an ICU, a role that is both challenging and fulfilling. Initially, I aspired to become a doctor but realized that an eight-year medical school journey wasn't for me. Now, my goal is to attend PA school.
Significant Experiences
My passion for healthcare was rekindled when a family member suffered a heart attack. Despite the initial prognosis that they wouldn't recover fully, we witnessed remarkable progress. This experience reinforced my desire to be part of the healthcare field.
Educational Journey
My mother has been a cornerstone of support throughout my college journey. Even during difficult times, she encouraged me to keep pushing forward and always put my best foot forward.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The biggest challenge I faced was questioning whether the career I was pursuing was right for me. Recently, I have adopted a habit of reaffirming my commitment to this path, reminding myself that it is indeed the right one for me.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your Work?
The sense of fulfillment I feel after finishing a shift is unparalleled. Knowing that I have given my best, despite the challenges, is incredibly rewarding.
Key Skills and Qualities for Success
Success in this field requires discipline, empathy, passion, and a genuine presence for people, rather than just focusing on the financial aspect.
Memorable Accomplishments
One of my proudest achievements is maintaining a 3.00 GPA at Mesa College and being acknowledged by the dean for my academic performance.
Influences and Role Models
My grandmother has been the biggest influence in my life. She moved from Somalia to America and has always inspired me to be the best version of myself. Her resilience and strength remind me to always look at the bigger picture.
Important Lessons Learned
One crucial lesson I’ve learned is not to have fixed expectations for life because the future is unpredictable. Being steadfast in my faith has helped me a lot, as it reminds me that God is the best of planners.
Making a Difference
I hope to make a difference in my field by being authentic. I want people to choose me as their caregiver because they see my genuine care and realness.
Legacy
I want to be remembered for my core being rather than the perceptions others may have of me.
Changes in the Industry
I would like to see the healthcare industry become more inclusive of people like me. Representation matters, and patients need to see caregivers who reflect their backgrounds and experiences.
Hobbies and Interests
In my free time, I love to read, go to the beach, take photographs, and window shop. I cherish the sense of accomplishment after a productive day.
Recommendations
I highly recommend watching the movies Sabrina and Gone Girl, as well as a documentary about Marilyn Monroe. One of my favorite books is Tracking the Wild Woman Archetype: A Guide to Becoming a Whole, Indivisible Woman.
Goals
My long-term goals include investing more energy into myself and my needs, paying off my car, and traveling abroad. In the short term, I am excited about getting certified as a phlebotomist.
Final Thoughts
Be your true self and never settle. Put your best foot forward and take life one day at a time.
