There are so many important tools to use when teaching. When becoming a teacher, you have to learn all different types of skills in order to best teach your students. One important skill teacher’s need to learn is the art of storytelling. Storytelling is such a key tool to have in your teacher toolbelt, especially when teaching young children. It allows them to accept different views and makes them want to listen to the story. It lets them be engaged and excited, as well as being a part of the story.
It is a known fact that storytelling dates back many, many years ago. An article published by Princeton stated that “people began speaking and told stories thousands of years before they learned to read, write, and keep records.” (Princeton, p. 4). So needless to say, storytelling has been around for a very long time. The article also mentions a book entitled “Structure and History in Greek Mythology” by Walter Burkert. In his book, Burkert states that “A tale becomes traditional not by virtue of being created, but by being retold and accepted”. (Princeton, p. 7). Many teachers can tell the same story to their students; however, it is more than likely that teachers will retell the same story differently to each of their students. This allows students to have different views of the same story. It doesn’t mean that one way is the correct version or not; it’s just different. It is so important for kids to realize that they might have different views than other people about something. It doesn’t mean that their view is right or wrong, but they should accept the other person’s view. This skill is crucial for kids to learn because everybody thinks differently from others.
