Every third Monday of January in the United States, the nation recognizes Martin Luther King Jr. Day in honor of the minister and activist who became the leading voice of the Civil Rights Movement. King’s message of nonviolence in the face of racial discrimination and hatred remains a source of inspiration for new generations of Americans. Among the causes King championed were voting rights, desegregation, and workers’ rights. His legacy survives through peaceful activism, the hard-fought victories of the Civil Rights Movement, and its many leaders.
