Allensworth State Historic Park
As we explore how “Black Lives Matter” in the building of the American culture, consider a little-known town created by a self-reliant group of African American families. This town, built more than 100 years ago, was created by black families, for black families.
Although many pioneers came to California in search of riches, Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth came to the state in a quest for liberty.
In 1908, he created Allensworth as an African American, intentional community in southern Tulare County – a community that would allow its residents to work and flourish without fear of discrimination. Within a few years, it was a prosperous Central Valley town.
