Rashguard

  • Rashguards are a staple of grappling sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and are just as useful for grappling in HEMA. In addition to wicking sweat and preventing the spread of bacteria, they prevent mat burn and help to protect the skin and body during grappling. These can be found online or at any major sporting goods store. There are rashguards for both the upper and lower body.

Jackets

  • SPES JF Ringen Jacket:

    • This jacket is specifically designed for ringen. Not only does it protect the body from the mat and wick away sweat, but it also allows for historical techniques like throwing from the belt or collar of a jacket.

Legs

  • There are no standard recommendations for ringen pants. Often, fighters compete in a rashguard and fight shorts. Generally, equipment for grappling sports like BJJ is perfectly suited to ringen.

Mats

While many grappling techniques can be practiced on grass or other soft surfaces, throws and takedowns should be done on appropriate mats for safety reasons. In general, mats used for wrestling or BJJ are well-suited to HEMA grappling. Lightweight roll out mats like this can be a good resource for clubs or events with the funding.
