Romanian folk dances come in a variety of forms, including dances for singles, couples, and mixed groups. But one of the nation’s most unique dance genres is the Feciorește, or lad’s dance. Drawing from a rich collection of regional traditions, lad’s dances usually consist of a troop of men, who perform at public festivals and events like weddings. It’s a way for young men to get involved with their community, build teamwork, and stay active, and their performances liven up many special days in Romania.

One of the most common lad’s dance forms is for the dancers to arrange themselves in a counter-clockwise circle, dancing around guests or musicians. This video, courtesy of UNESCO, shows several examples of Romanian lad’s dances from all around the country. Enjoy!
