Nana Amuah-Afenyi VI, or Peggielene Bartels, is one of the most unusual kings in Ghana. Born in Ghana in 1953, she spent most of her adult life working at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC and is also a US citizen. But when her uncle, the king of a small coastal town called Otuam, passed away in 2008, Bartels soon learned that she had been chosen as Otuam’s next king.

In this video from the Library of Congress, Bartels, or “King Peggy,” tells her story in her own words, including the surprise of being declared king, the controversy of a female king, and the challenges she has faced balancing her work with the Embassy and the responsibilities of leadership. During her reign, she has actively promoted the growth of education, tourism, financial resources, and access to technology in Otuam.
