Article Visibility on TOTA
When you create an article on TOTA, you can decide who sees it through the ‘Visibility’ setting in the Article Editor. The two basic settings are ‘Public’ and ‘Private,’ with new articles set to Public by default. Additionally, you can increase the visibility of your work by submitting it for review. If approved, your articles may appear on TOTA’s homepage and will be available through our search feature for all users to discover. More information about each privacy level is included below:
Private
Private articles can only be viewed by you. If you want to keep a journal, work on rough drafts, or store family records, you can create as many Private articles as you like.
To make an article Private, simply uncheck the Public box under Visibility in the editor. You can double check the status of your post from the ‘Articles’ page located on your sidebar.
Public
Public articles are visible from your profile and within any group they belong to. By setting an article to Public, you agree to share it with your followers or fellow group members.
Public articles can focus on any topic of your choosing but are subjected to basic moderation. A Public article may be removed if it contains:
Inflammatory, racist, or sexist sentiments. We encourage the celebration of people and cultures, not the disparagement of others.
Depictions of gratuitous violence, sexual imagery, animal cruelty, or similar content
Copyright infringing materials
Reviewed
Reviewed articles have been viewed and approved by a member of the TOTA team. They are checked to ensure they meet the previous moderation standards and are relevant to our wider community. Once approved, Reviewed articles become visible to all TOTA members--people will be able to find your post through the search feature or as a random tile on the front page, for example.
The Reviewed setting is best for non-academic works that are still of cultural value. Things like recipes, family stories, personal essays, musical performances, restaurant reviews, travel logs, and blog-style posts are all welcome and encouraged. Our mission is to represent voices of all backgrounds, interests, and writing ability, so don’t be afraid to submit your work.
To request a review, please email content@tota.world with a link to the article. A more streamlined review system is currently in development. If your content is in a different language or a difficult format, our review team will work with you to the best of their ability.
TOTA Certified
TOTA Certified articles have passed our highest review clearance. These are typically published by academics, cultural leaders, and other authorities on a topic or culture, but anyone is welcome to submit their content for review.
TOTA Certified articles must meet the previous standards for moderation and relevancy, and they must also back up their claims with credible, cited sources. That source may sometimes be the wisdom of a respected individual, but for the most part we request academically disciplined work.
Certified articles are visible to everyone and, in the future, may be distinguished through special search filters, badges, article spotlights, or member incentives.
To request TOTA Certification, please email content@tota.world with a link to the article. A more streamlined request system is currently in development. If your content is in a different language or a difficult format, our review team will work with you to the best of their ability. An article that does not meet these standards may still be marked as Reviewed.
